Road closures mark Marine's last trip home

January 07, 2011

FREDERICK, Md. — The Frederick County Sheriff's Office closed some ramps and sections of Interstate 70 and U.S. 15 Friday to provide for the dignified return of a slain U.S. Marine from Hagerstown.

The roads closed for up to 15 minutes around midday for a police-escorted transport of the remains of Lance Cpl. Maung Htiak  from Dover Air Force Base in Delaware to the Stauffer Funeral Home in Frederick, the sheriff's office said.

The transportation went smoothly and without incident, the sheriff's office said.

The 20-year-old graduate of Smithsburgh High School died last Saturday in combat in Helmand province in Afghanistan.

His family plans a funeral service Saturday in Frederick, followed by interment at Arlington National Cemetery on Jan. 18.
