Martinsburg man killed in single-vehicle crash

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — A Martinsburg man died Thursday night in a single-vehicle crash in Berkeley County, West Virginia State Police said in a news release.

The crash near the intersection of Paynes Ford Road and Airport Road was reported at about 10:45 p.m., police said.

Police determined that the vehicle, driven by  Lucky L. Phipps, 34, of Blairton Road, was traveling north on Airport Road when it left the paved portion of the roadway, then went onto an embankment, rolled over and crashed into a small stand of trees.

Emergency personnel extricated Phipps from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

A passenger, identified as Robert L. Phipps, was taken to City Hospital in Martinsburg for treatment, the release said.

The cause of the crash is being investigated by Senior Trooper J. D. Schuessler, according to the release.
