HAGERSTOWN — A new traffic signal was activated Wednesday at the intersection of Salem Avenue and Broadfording Road west of Hagerstown, according to the Maryland State Highway Administration.

The signal was placed on "flash mode" Wednesday before switching to full-color operation Friday, weather permitting. The "flash" period gives drivers time to adjust to the signal before it goes into full operation, the SHA said Tuesday in an e-mail.

Signs will be posted along Md. 58 (Salem Ave./Cearfoss Pike) to alert motorists of the new traffic pattern.

The new signal is designed to improve safety on Md. 58 as motorists attempt to access nearby shopping centers, according to the SHA.

Anyone with questions about the signal may call the District 6 office at 301-729-8400 or toll-free at 1-800-760-7138.
