Town council member wants monthly report on legal expenses

SMITHSBURG — A Smithsburg Town Council member suggested Tuesday night that council members get more briefings on the town’s legal expenses.

Town Attorney Charles F. Wagaman Jr. bills the town about twice a year for his legal work, but council member Troy Jernigan suggested there be a monthly report outlining Wagaman’s charges to the town.

That way, council members can determine if the “services (are) worth what we’re given.”

Describing Wagaman’s twice-a-year billing to the town, Mayor Mildred “Mickey” Myers said, “he’s always done it that way and it’s all accounted for.”

Myers, however, said perhaps a different reporting procedure for legal expenses for the town could be started.

Former mayor John O’Neal remembered

SMITHSBURG — Mayor Mildred “Mickey” Myers remembered former Mayor John O’Neal during a Smithsburg Town Council meeting Tuesday night.
Myers said O’Neal, who died Dec. 29, was mayor of the town from 1990 to 1994.

O’Neal was honored during a Municipal Government Works Week recognition ceremony at Town Hall in 2003.

That event was held to remember Smithsburg leaders’ contributions to the town.

During the event, Town Manager Betsy Martin said she learned the town office ropes from O'Neal, who bought the town's first computer.
