Moment of silence held at Smithsburg meeting in honor of fallen Marine

SMITHSBURG — Mayor Mildred “Mickey” Myers led a moment of silence Tuesday night in honor of a U.S. Marine and 2008 Smithsburg High School graduate who died Saturday during combat operations in Helmand province in southern Afghanistan.
Maung P. Htaik “gave his all” Myers said at the beginning of a Smithsburg Town Council meeting.

Htaik was an infantryman assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 2, II Marine Expeditionary Force, according to the Marine  Corps. A news release issued Tuesday did not provide any additional details of his death, which the Department of Defense said Monday was in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Funeral services scheduled for Htaik

Services for Maung P. Htaik will be Saturday in Frederick.

The family will receive friends at Frederick Christian Fellowship, 10142 Hansonville Road, from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m.

Interment with full honors will be Tuesday, Jan. 18, at 9 a.m. in Arlington National Cemetery.
