ST. JAMES — Tiffany Younker hit the game-winning free throw with 9.3 seconds left to play Tuesday night to lift Hancock to a 41-40 win over Saint James.

Younker went to the line for two shots with the score tied at 40. She missed the first shot, prompting coach Todd Ruppenthal to take a timeout.

“I told her that after she made (the second shot) she would need to jump the ball on defense,” Ruppenthal said.

Younker made the second shot and the Panthers pressured the inbounds pass. The Saints got the ball in to Lisle Bruns, who heaved a desperation shot at the buzzer that fell well short.

Senior center Maureen Leavy led Hancock (2-5) with a double-double, getting 18 points and 20 rebounds while adding three assists. It was the Panthers’ second straight win and avenged a loss to Saint James earlier in the season.

Both teams were stricken by turnovers in the first half and Hancock sputtered to an 18-17 lead at the half. The Saints (4-2) started the third quarter with a 9-0 run, then went cold while the Panthers answered with a 16-0 streak to take a 34-26 lead.

“It’s been a big turnaround for us,” Ruppenthal said. “We’ve been in flux, but we’re starting to play well and the girls are looking for each other more.”

Trailing by the same margin with 5:48 left in fourth quarter, the Saints went on another 9-0 run to take a 35-34 lead. But a stout Hancock defense and a couple of foul calls kept the game close to the end.

“Some of the fouls that were called at the end took the girls out of their game,” Saint James coach Shawn Burgener said.

Jordan Wills led the Saints with 14 points and three assists, while Bruns added 13 points and Kayla Peterson grabbed seven boards.

Hancock’s JV team stifled Saint James, 39-2. Morgan Bain had nine points for the Panthers and Kristen Shoemaker added eight. Ellie Williams scored the only field goal for the Saints.
