Samuel E. Shannon Jr., age 78, of Chambersburg, Pa., died at his home Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011. Born Feb. 19, 1932, in Hamilton Township, Franklin County, Pa., he was the son of the late Samuel E. Sr. and Martha (Hoffman) Shannon.  

After graduating in 1951 from Chambersburg High School, Sam went to work as a farmer for 25 years, and later at James River Corp. for 24 years, where he retired as a machinist in 1994. Sam was a member of King Street United Brethren Church, the Burton Men's Bible Class, the C.V. Antique Engine and Machinery Association, and the National Rifle Association. As a member of King Street, he served on the Board of Administration for six years, as well as serving for many years as an usher, and at the time of his death was the head usher. He volunteered at Camp Joy El and also at Rhodes Grove Camp. At one time, he was a member of the board of directors for 10 years at Rhodes Grove Camp.  

Surviving are his beloved wife of 58 years, Ruth Knoll Shannon, whom he married Aug. 10, 1952; three loving children, Judith E. Eckenrode (husband Richard) of Chambersburg, Tina C. Mentzer (husband Perry) of Greencastle and Paul S. Shannon (wife Lucinda) of Marion; five cherished grandchildren, Anthony Eckenrode, Dusty Jo Shannon Cradduck (husband Justin), and Marshall, Levi and Ruby Mentzer; three sisters, Joyce Timmons (husband Barry Sr.) of Mercersburg, Cynthia Jones (husband Melvin) of Chambersburg and Linda Bricker (husband Gale) of Mercersburg; three brothers, Richard Shannon (wife Rhoda) of Chambersburg, Donald Shannon (wife Karen) of Chambersburg and Kenneth Shannon (wife Dorothy) of Fayetteville; and nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Timothy C. Shannon, who died June 26, 1969.

Funeral services will be Friday, Jan. 7, 2011, at 11:30 a.m. in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, Pa., where the Rev. Lester F. Stine and the Rev. Paul B. Baker will officiate. The family will receive friends Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011, from 6 to 8 p.m. and one hour before the service Friday at the funeral home. Interment will follow the service in Norland Cemetery.
