Virginia S. Haynes, 94, of Hagerstown, Md., died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2011, at Loyalton of Hagerstown.    

Born June 4, 1916, in Berkeley Station, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Axel W. and Myra E. Smith Steele.

Virginia was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Carroll M. Haynes, on Oct. 18, 2006.

Even though she was born in Berkeley County, she came to Washington County at about 6 months and spent most of her growing-up years in Rohrersville. After her marriage to Carroll M. Haynes on April 9, 1937, she spent most of the rest of her life in Hagerstown.

For most of her first 60 years, she was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Rohrersville. While there, she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir and was organist for a number of years. In 1979, she transferred her membership to Grace United Methodist Church in Hagerstown.


Virginia is survived by one son, Philip R. Haynes of Hagerstown; two granddaughters,  Pamela D. Dunn and Krista N. Wallech, both of Hagerstown; three great-grandchildren, Brittany Obitts of Williamsport, and Matthew Dunn and Emmalee Wallech, both of Hagerstown; one great-great-grandson, Aidan O’Kane of Williamsport; and three stepgreat-grandchildren, Josh Wallech, Lauren Dunn and Dallas Dunn, all of Hagerstown.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Axel H. Steele and James S. Steele.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Clark D. Carr will officiate. Burial will be in Locust Grove Cemetery in Rohrersville, Md.

The family will receive friends Monday at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m.
