David Robert Orvos, 52

AMHERST, Va. — David Robert Orvos, 52, of Amherst, Va., died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2010, at his residence.

He was the husband of Andrea Reiser Orvos for 24 years.

David was the son of the late Mike and Ann Beluch Orvos. He was born in Detroit, Mich. on Oct. 4, 1958 and moved to Maugansville, Md., at a young age.

He began his career as a cardiac rescue technician with Community Rescue Service in Hagerstown, Md. and was a volunteer firefighter with the Maugansville Goodwill Volunteer Fire Co.

After completing his doctorate and post-doctoral studies at Virginia Tech, he did environmental research for Smithkline Beecham in Philadelphia.

Teaching was always David’s passion. He taught for a short time at SUNY Fredonia before coming to Sweet Briar College in Amherst, Va., to co-found the Department of Environmental Studies.


David touched many people’s lives and will be sadly missed by his many friends, family, colleagues and students.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Michael Andre Orvos; a brother, Richard Orvos of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; a sister, Linda Schneider and husband, Jack, of Mount Clemens, Mich.; a niece, Elizabeth Schneider; and a nephew, Jack Schneider.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 29, 2010, at Sweet Briar College with Chaplain Adam White officiating.
