CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — Effective Tuesday, Franklin County  libraries will further reduce weekly hours of operation, the  system’s director said in a news release.

Because of cuts in state aid to public libraries, seven libraries must close an additional total of 19 hours per week, according to Bernice Crouse, the executive director of the Franklin County Library System.

“We held out as long as we could. Staff members were stretched to the ultimate in 2010 trying to maintain the majority of library operation schedules. The additional staff cuts necessary just would not allow normal hours of operation,” Crouse said in the release.

She said the moves are the result of unavoidable cuts in staff hours, totaling 300 hours from the 2009 to the present, reflecting $250,000 loss annually in state revenue.

The changes are necessary to remain fiscally responsible and are intended to have a minimal impact on library patrons, she said.
In addition, all county libraries will be closed today, Saturday and Monday. All libraries are closed on Sundays.
