WAYNESBORO, Pa. — John Charles O'Neal, formerly of Smithsburg, Md., passed away Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2010, at his home in Waynesboro, Pa.

Born July 1, 1935, in Frost Town, Frederick County, Md., he was the son of the late Fred W. and Margaret O'Neal.

John graduated from Boonsboro High School, Class of 1953. After graduation, he worked at Potomac Dye and Finishing in Hagerstown, and later worked for the Smithsburg Blue Ox until 1966, when he became employed by Mack Trucks Inc., from which he retired in December 1996.

Before his illness, John was actively involved with many community organizations, including the Smithsburg Volunteer Fire Co., Smithsburg Emergency Medical Service, Junior Achievement, and Boy Scouts. He enjoyed working at the Smithsburg Carnival, the steam and craft show, and was the "voice of the Leopards" commentator for the Smithsburg football team's home games for many years. He served three terms on the Smithsburg town council and one term as mayor, from 1990 to 1994.  

He was a member of St. Paul's Free Lutheran Church in Leitersburg.

He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Julia E. (Barkdoll) O'Neal, whom he married Dec. 26, 1954; four children, Douglas S. and wife Deborah, Larry C. and wife Rachel, Melody D. Hockensmith and husband Steven, and Debra S. Rhodes and husband Edward; six grandchildren, Matthew B. Rhodes and wife Donna, Clinton J. O'Neal and fiancee Jessica Terry, Jessica M. Rhodes and husband Bernard, Jason T. O'Neal, Janelle C. Souza and husband Dan, and Sean C. O'Neal; one great-grandchild, Zecharia Souza; Carrie L Stottlemyer, a niece whom he treated as a grandchild, and her fiance, Kevin Elter; one brother, Fred J. O'Neal, and wife Judy; two sisters, Myrtle V. Snow, and Patricia A. Pattison and husband Richard; and Vickie O'Neal, widow of Donald L. O'Neal. He is also survived by many other family and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Donald L. O'Neal.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 2, 2011 at the Davis Funeral Home. Pastor Terry Culler will officiate the funeral ceremony on Monday, Jan. 3, 2011, which will be held at St. Paul's Free Lutheran Church, 21513 Leitersburg-Smithsburg Road,

Hagerstown, Md., beginning at 10 a.m. Prior to the funeral service, the family will receive friends beginning at 9:30 a.m.  Interment services will immediately follow at the Smithsburg Cemetery, West Water Street, Smithsburg, Md.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the following: St. Paul's Free Lutheran Church, 21513 Leitersburg-Smithsburg Road, Hagerstown MD 21742, and/or to Lutheran Home Care & Hospice Inc., 2700 Luther Drive, Chambersburg PA 17202.
