Betty Auxt "Bets" Eves, 88, of Hagerstown, died Dec. 26, 2010, at Reeders Memorial Home in Boonsboro, Md.


Born July 30, 1922, in Chambersburg, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Harriet Pugh Auxt and George A. Auxt. She was raised in the home of her grandparents, Solomon Huber Pugh and Sarah Heckman Pugh.


After graduating in 1940 from Hagerstown High School, she attended Lenoir Rhyne College in Hickory, N.C.
She worked at Fairchild Aircraft, as a computer demonstrator for IBM in Washington, D.C., and as a feature writer for the Daily Mail. She also tutored English in the Office of the Cultural Attaché in Tehran, Iran, and later worked as an employment specialist with the Maryland State Employment office.


She appreciated her garden, flowers, birds at her feeder and phases of the moon. A hallmark of her personality was her ability to see the good in almost everyone and every situation.

At her request, her body was donated to the Anatomy Board of Maryland.


She is survived by her daughter, Adair Eves of Hagerstown; one sister, Katherine Stonesifer of Staunton, Va.; one brother, George Auxt and his wife, Virginia Miller Auxt, of Venice, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Mary Jane Auxt of Hagerstown; a brother-in-law, the Rev. Paul Feil of Reading, Pa.; a sister-in-law, Frances Martin Eves of Hagerstown; 12 nieces; and nine nephews.


She was preceded in death by her husband, Amos F. Eves; her sister, Dorothy Feil; and her brother, Andrew Auxt.  


A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 141 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown. A gathering for friends and family will be held in Mary Martha Hall at St. John’s following the service.
