POMPANO BEACH, Fla. — Samuel "Joe" Reed died Sunday, Dec. 26, 2010, in an assisted-living facility in Pompano Beach, Fla.

He was born in Hagerstown, Md., on Feb. 28, 1925, the son of Lloyd Kenneth Reed and Phoebe Grace Reed (nee Miller).

Joe graduated from Hagerstown High School and Shepherd College in Shepherdstown, W.Va.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific in the Navy Seabees.

In February 1950, Joe joined what was then the Federal Bureau of Narcotics, U.S. Treasury Department. He retired from DEA, Department of Justice, in November 1977. Toward the end of his career, he worked in the South Florida area.

He settled in the Fort Lauderdale, Fla., area after retirement. He then established a real estate firm in South Florida. Finally, Joe worked for the National Football League drug program as a consultant assigned to the Miami Dolphins, retiring in 2001.


He is survived by one brother, Warren K. Reed of Baltimore, and preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Reed (nee Gregory), and his brother, Lloyd E. Reed.

He was a 32nd Degree Mason, a Shriner, and a member of the Elks, American Legion and the Tall Cedars of Lebanon.

Funeral services and interment will be held in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010.
