HAGERSTOWN — A man claiming he had a weapon robbed The Columbia Bank along South Potomac Street in Hagerstown Tuesday afternoon, city police said.

The man, described as being tall and wearing wire-framed glasses, entered the bank at 900 S. Potomac St. at about 2:51 p.m. and approached one of the tellers, said Lt. Paul Kifer, a spokesman for the Hagerstown Police Department.

After a brief discussion with the teller, the man told the worker he had a weapon, although one was not shown, Kifer said.

The man demanded cash and was given an undisclosed amount of money, Kifer said.

The man fled out the door, and police believe he turned right, heading toward downtown Hagerstown.

Hagerstown police officers responded to the bank within seconds after being dispatched to the call, Kifer said.

Hancock Police Chief T.J. Buskirk responded with a police dog that led officers on a track behind a laundromat in the 800 block of South Potomac Street, Kifer said.

The track ended behind the laundromat, and Kifer said it is possible the man climbed into a car at that point.

There were some footprints in the snow behind the laundromat, Kifer said.

The man, whose image was caught on a surveillance system in the bank, was wearing a gray hooded sweat shirt. "Aero" could be seen on the front of the sweat shirt, and there was a yellow design under the lettering, Kifer said.

The man also was wearing jeans, a black, beanie-style winter cap with an unknown design on the front and was carrying a pair of heavy winter gloves, Kifer said.

The man was believed to be in his 40s or 50s, and about 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet tall, Kifer said.

A cash reward is being offered for information leading to the apprehension and charging of a suspect in the robbery, Kifer said.

Anyone with information about the case can call the Hagerstown Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division at 301-790-3700, ext. 234.
