Blazers, Indians advance to Shootout final

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. — Sam Elwood had 13 points and four assists to lead Clear Spring to a 54-38 victory over Hancock on Monday in the first round of the Berkeley Springs Rotary Club Tri-State Shootout.

Ryan Aaron had 12 points and Mikey Sensenbaugh added six points and 10 rebounds for Clear Spring (4-2).

Spencer Heller scored 17 points and Donnie O’Brien added eight points for Hancock.

Southern Fulton 71, Berkeley Springs 43

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. — Ryan Harper had 17 points to lead Southern Fulton over Berkeley Springs in the Berkeley Springs Rotary Club Tri-State Shootout.

Nick Smart added 14 points  for Southern Fulton.

Jared Spielman had 12 points and Brady Spielman added 11 for Berkeley Springs (4-2).

Clear Spring will face Southern Fulton for the championship tonight at 7:30. Berkeley Springs will face Hancock at 6 in the consolation game.

Fort Hill 77, Grace Academy 25

CUMBERLAND, Md. — The Sentinels pulled away to a victory over the Knights in the Fort Hill Tournament. No other details were available.



GIRLS BASKETBALL

Berkeley Springs 61, Wirt County 26

SHINNSTON, W.Va. — Sarah Haynes led the Indians with 21 points and 12 steals as Berkeley Springs remained undefeated, defeating Wirt County in the Lincoln McDonalds Tournament.  

Berkeley Springs (8-0) will play Lincoln on Wednesday.

Deidra Burch scored 14 points and Harlie Stotler added 12 points and 15 rebounds for the Indians.



COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Rams’ Steele to play in Cactus Bowl

Shepherd University senior Deante Steele has been selected to play in the Cactus Bowl on Jan. 7, 2011, at Javelina Stadium in Kingsville, Texas.

Steele, a first team All-West Virginia Conference selection as a return specialist for the third straight year, had a 20.8-yard kickoff-return average and a 9.7 punt-return average this season. He set an NCAA Division II record with his 11th career kick-return touchdown in a win over West Liberty, and his 13 career return touchdowns tied a Division II record.

The Cactus Bowl will feature 88 Division II players from across the country.

Bulldogs 9-U baseball tryouts

The Hagerstown Bulldogs 9-U travel baseball team will hold tryouts from 8:30 to 10 a.m. on Jan. 15 at Extra Innings in Hagerstown. Players cannot turn 10 before May 1, 2011.
