Joe Shaffer, 95, passed away peacefully at his home on Dec. 25, 2010, after an extended illness.

He lived a long and healthy life and was a gregarious, happy and kind person with an endearing personality.

"Lefty Joe Shaffer" was an avid sports fan all his life, was an outstanding baseball pitcher during his youth and played for the minor league club of the Detroit Tigers for some time. In 1996, he was inducted into the Washington County Sports Hall of Fame. He was influential in establishing the Federal Little League and coached the American and Federal Little League teams for 15 years.

Born in Security, Md., on Valentine's Day in 1915, he lived, worked and raised a family in Hagerstown, the town he loved.

He was predeceased by his father and mother, Frank and Esther Shaffer; his sister, Elizabeth Shaffer; his brother, Julius Shaffer; and wife, Jane Carty Shaffer.

He was an employee for Potomac Edison for 10 years and then worked for C&P Telephone as a supervisor for 35 years, retiring in 1980.

He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Mae (Dinterman) Clemson Shaffer; daughter, Joan Shaffer Gardner; son, Joe David Shaffer; and stepsons, David Clemson and Robert Clemson. He is also survived by grandchildren, J. Kristie Williams, Joe David Shaffer Jr. and Debbie Lippy; four stepgrandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Family will receive friends Wednesday, Dec. 29, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North in Hagerstown. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 30, at 11 a.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home with the Rev. Christopher Moore officiating.

Interment will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown, Md.
