Navy Seaman Joshua D. Campbell, son of Lynnette Rhine of Hagerstown and Gary G. Campbell of Sharpsburg, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

Campbell is a 2006 graduate of South Hagerstown High School.


Air Force Airman Christopher A. Lewis, son of Kimberly Chillote of Greencastle, Pa., and John Lewis of Clear Spring, graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio.

Lewis graduated in 2008 from Greencastle-Antrim (Pa.) High School.


Marine Corps Cpl. Benjamin S. Cooper, son of William E. Cooper of Hagerstown and Katrina M. Zellman of Martinsburg, W.Va., participated in an amphibious landing exercise called Phiblex ’11 on the island of Luzon, the Philippines.

Sailors from an aircraft carrier, a dock landing ship and an amphibious transport dock ship, along with members of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit based in Okinawa, Japan, and members of the Philippine military shared tactics, weapons and field rations during the exercise.

The exercise allowed American service members to train in a foreign environment and get a better understanding of how American and Filipino military operations function together.  

Cooper graduated in 2005 from Smithsburg High School and received an associate degree in 2009 from the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, Calif.


Air Force Airman Justin A. Gloss, son of Dr. Lee and Lori Viar of Hagerstown, graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio.

Gloss graduated in 2009 from North Hagerstown High School.

Navy Seaman Recruit Kenneth C. Smoyer, a 2007 graduate of Linganore High School, Frederick, Md., recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.
