Mail Call for Dec. 24

December 23, 2010

"Dec. 21 is the 10th anniversary of when the founder of the Showcase of Bands died. We miss you greatly, Mr. John Fignar Jr., and so does the Washington County school music program. May you rest in peace."

— Hagerstown

"The caller from Williamsport with issues with crossing guards: They are put at school crossings for the safety of the children. If a child goes back and forth after school hours to play on the school grounds, then the parents are held responsible for their safety. I can remember an incident that happened in Williamsport back in the mid '40s. A little girl was coming home from elementary school, just a half block from her home, and was run over by a big lime truck, and she spent months in the hospital. She is lucky to be alive today. That little girl is now grown up and is a crossing guard."

— Washington County

"This is to the caller who called about the salary of the governors, lieutenant governor, Congress and Senate. As of three years ago, the salary of the Maryland governor was $150,000 a year. The salary of a lieutenant governor was $125,000 a year, and the salary of a Senate member and a Congressman is both $174,000 a year. The Speaker of the House makes $194,000 a year."

— Hagerstown

"What is going on in Washington with the legislature is proof positive that a flat tax is the only logical solution. Everyone pays proportionate to their income. Business would pay according to their profits. Washington cannot manipulate things to a particular advantage. Washington has a vested interest in the economy doing well, because they only have to spend what they collect. No more deficit, no more loans from foreign countries. Balanced budget. ... It is not that complicated, guys."

— Hagerstown

"This is to the Hagerstown caller who said her insurance rates went up 40 percent, and she called her insurance company and they said that it was because of Obamacare. ... It's not because of the health care bill. It's because of one word: Greed. Did you see their profits in their last quarter? They're trying to scoop up before the bill goes totally in effect in two years. So it's one word, greed."

— Hagerstown

"To all of our friends and neighbors on Orndorff Drive in Smithsburg, we wish everyone a merry Christmas and a happy New Year."

— Smithsburg

"Section 7 of our U.S. Constitution says all bills for raising revenues shall originate in the House of Representatives, but the Senate may propose or concur with amendments, as on other bills. It's amazing that the Senate just passed the first portion or the first attempt to pass this tax cut bill, or actually keeping the tax cut of the Bush era in place. It's supposed to originate in the House, always. It's amazing how illiterate our current government is."
