Senior Center

The Senior Center at Girls Inc. in Hagerstown will be closed from Dec.  24 to 31 in observance of the Christmas and New Year's holiday. The staff and members of the center wish the West Hagerstown community a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Zumba classes

Zumba classes will be offered for the winter session from Tuesday, Jan. 11 and Wednesday, Jan. 12, for 15 weeks, ending Tuesday, April 19, and Wednesday, April 20.

The session will break the weeks of April 25 and May 2. Classes will be held at St. Mark's Parish Hall, 18313 Lappans Road in Boonsboro (note: the Parish Hall is in use Tuesday, March 8 (Shrove Tuesday), and Wednesday, March 9 (Ash Wednesday). Classes are canceled for Holy Week. Two back-to-back (5:30 and 6:45 p.m.) make-up classes will be scheduled on two consecutive Monday evenings during the session and dates will be announced at class and through e-mail.

The session will not run beyond April 20. If you have any questions on whether the hall is closed due to weather conditions, call St. Mark's rectory. There will be a message on the machine if the hall is closed. The program will use the "school closing" system to monitor whether classes will be held or not. If there is a two-hour delay, classes will be held. If schools are closed, there will be no class.

There is no baby-sitting service offered.

With the construction and addition of the new community hall, there might be a new parking pattern for the January classes.

Participants can register before the end of the fall session, or by mail before Jan. 10.

Peaceable Paws dog performance titling

Proud of your dog? Want to show the world how wonderful she is? Now's your chance to earn performance titles for your well-loved family dog without the intimidation factor and cost that often accompanies "professional" obedience and agility competitions.

Starting in January, Peaceable Paws Dog & Puppy Training will offer affordable performance titling for family dogs in a relaxed, low-key environment on its 80-acre campus in Fairplay, five miles south of Hagerstown. The group's goal is to help people have fun with their dogs. PPaws will offer titles in eight different events, including:

  • My Dog Can Do That Champion
  • Canine Games Champion
  • PPaws Good Manners Dog
  • PPaws Scent Dog
  • PPaws Trick Dog
  • PPaws Treibball (Canine Drive Ball) Dog
  • PPaws Dancing Dog
  • PPaws Interactive Toy Dog

PPaws will also offer Versatility Championships for dogs who title in multiple events. The training center will alternate My Dog Can Do That and Canine Games competitions on the first Friday of each month, beginning Friday, Jan. 7 from 7 to 9 p.m., and will hold titling events on the fourth Saturday of each month from 2 to 4 p.m. The cost is $5 per dog, per event.
