Ugly win better for Leopards than no win

SMITHSBURG — After its game against Boonsboro on Monday night, Smithsburg girls basketball coach Katy Barnhart hit the nail right on the head: “A win is a win.”

Neither the Leopards nor the Warriors found their stroke on offense, but Smithsburg held off a late Boonsboro rally to win 37-28 in an MVAL Antietam game.

The December weather must have found its way into Smithsburg’s gym, as both teams started the game ice cold. The Leopards (3-0, 2-0) went 2 for 16 from the floor in the first quarter, while the Warriors (3-2, 2-1) missed their first 12 shots. Still, Smithsburg took a 7-1 lead that it would not relinquish.

“We’re happy to win, but we are still growing, both offensively and defensively,” said Barnhart.

Smithsburg poured it on with a 12-2 run in the second quarter to take an 18-3 halftime lead. Sara Rishell scored nine of her 14 points in the first half and ended the night with a double-double, also grabbing 10 rebounds.

“(Sara) is definitely a presence, she’s a big part of both our offense and defense,” Barnhart said. “She gives 100 percent all the time.”

Shannon O’Brien scored all three of Boonsboro’s first half points.

The Warriors showed some spark to begin the second half, going on a 6-2 run, but they were unable to maintain that momentum. Ashley Smothers came alive in the second half, scoring 12 points to go along with nine rebounds and two steals.

“Boonsboro gives 100 percent effort every game, so it’s good to play a team like that to see where your team is,” said Barnhart. “It wasn’t pretty — sometimes we have to refocus a little bit — but we will take it.”
