Kara Leigh DeWitt, 24, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Friday, Dec. 17, 2010 at her home, due to complications following surgery.

Kara was born Sept. 20, 1986 in Hagerstown, Md. Her proud parents are Donna and Anthony Valente of Smithsburg, Md., with whom she resided, and Douglas E. and Rebecca DeWitt of Apex, N.C.

She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Temple in Hagerstown, where she accepted Jesus as her Savior and was baptized.

Kara attended Old Forge Elementary School and Smithsburg Middle School and received her high school diploma while attending Laurel Hall School in Smithsburg.

She attended the ARC Vocational Day Program and was a volunteer at the Humane Society of Washington County. As a result of her special love of animals, especially rabbits, she had the nickname "Rabbit Whisperer."

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her adoring grandfathers, Edward Bracken (Pappy), Joe DeWitt Jr. (Pappy Joe), and William Crum (Pappy Bill); grandmother Peggy Weiger (Grandma Peggy); beloved sister April D. Travis and husband Tim; her devoted brother Douglas J.E. DeWitt (Dougie); her adoring nieces and nephew, Markayla A. Burgan, Angelina A. Travis and Sean A. Travis; her caring and nurturing aunts and uncles, Linda Brant and husband Jim, Darlene Myers and husband Butch, Stephanie Valente, and Tammy Hagbert and husband Mike; her special friend Uncle Frank Valente and his fiancee Doris Morris, and many other aunts, uncles, sweet cousins and friends who loved her in spite of her disabilities.

She was preceded in death by her grandmother whom she cherished, Luella L. Bracken, who always called Kara her "Walking, Talking Miracle Baby." She was also preceded in death by her step-grandfather Douglas Weiger, and her very best friends, her bunnies, Buster, George and Angel.

Services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2010 at 11 a.m., from Emmanuel Baptist Temple Chapel, Hagerstown, Md., with Kara's close friend Pastor Larry Aikens officiating. Internment will follow the service at Smithsburg Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2010 from 6 to 9 p.m. at J.L. Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg, Md.
