BIG POOL, Md. — Russell F. Mizell Jr., of Big Pool, Md., died Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010 at his home.

Born on Sept. 7, 1921, in Gettysburg, Pa., he was the son of the late Russell Sr. and Blanche Weaner Mizell.

Russell graduated from Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School and the University of Maryland.

He was a farmer and established the first certified tree farm in Washington County. He also worked for State Use Industries at the Maryland Correctional Institution until his retirement.

He was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Clear Spring, Md.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Edith Bowling Mizell; his sister, Nina Ensor; his children, Dr. Russell Mizell III and wife Pat of Monticello, Fla., their children, Russell Mizell IV, and wife Kim and great-grandson Jackson of Tampa, Fla., and Ryan Mizell of Orlando, Fla.; Kandyce Douglas, and husband Richard of Hagerstown, Md., their children, Megan of New York City and Laura Douglas and husband Jason Kuhn of Baltimore, Md.; son, Larry Mizell and children, Aaron and Lindsay of Hagerstown; and daughter, Sherry Everitts and husband Gregory of Indian Springs, their children Christopher and wife Emily of Hancock, Md. and son, Jeremy and wife Brynn and great-grandson, Kellan of Jonesboro, Ark.; along with many nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

Russell's family will receive friends at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, on Thursday, Dec. 23 from 3 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742; the Washington County Library, 100 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown, MD 21740; or the Prostate Cancer Foundation, 1250 Fourth St., Santa Monica, CA 90401.
