'Cats raise bar after pinning Hubs, Knights

HAGERSTOWN — Six opponents up, six beaten down.

The Williamsport wrestling team continued its early-season roll Saturday in a tri-meet at North Hagerstown, defeating Middletown 55-18 and the host Hubs 63-12 to improve to 6-0. The Wildcats have outscored their six opponents 380-81.

In the other match Saturday, the Knights held off North 46-33.

“We’re wrestling pretty well right now,” Williamsport coach Mike Rechtorovic said. “One of our team goals this season was to beat Middletown since they had beaten us two years in a row. And beating North is always one of our goals because they’re a county rival.”

Perhaps it’s time to set some loftier goals.

“We still have a long season ahead of us,” Rechtorovic said. “We just have to focus on getting through next week.”

Bryan Davis (103 pounds), Killian Baker (125), George Ardinger (130) and Matt Cody (285) each had two pins Saturday for the Wildcats, while Josh Weyant (119), Kemper Baker (140), Eric Davis (145), Zach Shoemaker (152) and Reggie Russ (171) also each went 2-0 in the sweep.

The Wildcats are even winning some of the bouts they’re probably not supposed to win. Take Jeff Sibert, for example. He trailed North’s Cole Catlett 11-4 midway through the second period at 189, before reversing Catlett to his back and sticking him at 3:20.

“We’ve been working hard, and a lot of our guys are stepping up,” said Shoemaker, who’s one of Williamsport’s six undefeated wrestlers this season. “Hopefully we can just continue to dominate everybody.”

North’s Brendon Colbert is hoping to do the same. The highly touted freshman so far has lived up to the hype, as he went 2-0 Saturday at 112 to improve to 11-0.

“I’ve been ready for it,” said Colbert of high school wrestling. “I’ve been waiting for this time to come for a while.”

After Middletown opted to just forfeit to him, to the disappointment of several fans, Colbert didn’t waste the opportunity to showcase his talents against Williamsport. He scored six takedowns en route to a 14-4 lead against Clinton Vance, who was previously unbeaten, before pinning him in 3:50.

“(Colbert) is the real deal, no doubt about it,” Rechtorovic said.

Kenneth Burrs had another big day for North (5-6), recording a pair of pins at 160 to also remain undefeated.

The Hubs were without standouts Dylan Dopson and Duncan Yeisley, who have yet to wrestle this season due to injuries.

“We’re very young,” North coach Greg Slick said. “The kids are working hard in practice, and they’re trying hard. We’re just not as good as Williamsport and Middletown ... yet.”

Matt Capobianco (135), Dylan Herrmann (189) and Judd Ziegler (215) each went 2-0 for Middletown (5-4).
