Driver in hospital following high-speed chase

December 17, 2010

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — A high-speed chase in Berkeley County ended Friday night with the driver of the fleeing vehicle in Martinsburg City Hospital, a sheriff's deputy said.

The chase started in Martinsburg and Deputy C.S. Merson said he began following the Ford Festiva at the intersection on Tabler Station Road. The car had its lights off, and Merson said he backed off the chase because of safety concerns.

When the driver tried to turn south onto U.S. 11, the Festiva collided with a Ford Explorer, Merson said. The people in the Explorer were unhurt, he said.

Charges are pending against the unidentified driver, Merson said.
