Woman charged with taking heroin into jail

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — Heroin that a woman is accused of taking into Eastern Regional Jail apparently was used by eight other inmates who tested positive for the drug, according to Berkeley County Magistrate Court records.

Crystal Marie Wood, 26, of 44 Excursion Drive, Martinsburg, was arraigned Wednesday by Magistrate Harry L. Snow on one felony count of transporting a controlled substance into a correctional facility, according to court records.

Last month, Wood allegedly concealed the heroin in a tampon holder to get it past security at the jail, according to court records.

A guard became aware the heroin was in the jail after learning the drug was reportedly stolen from another item of Wood’s personal property, according to court records.

The eight other inmates tested positive for heroin on Nov. 8, according to court records.

Two of the eight worked together to steal the heroin from the defendant’s property inside the jail, according to a complaint filed by West Virginia State Trooper C.A. Ellwanger.
