Mail Call - Dec. 15

December 15, 2010

"I was reading this morning's paper, and I never saw so much crime in Hagerstown, Md., in my whole life, and I've lived here all my life, I'm 71. I can't believe the city of Hagerstown won't hire more policemen, said they don't have the money, but they can back all these other projects and give money away to different organizations. I think this city council has definitely got to go, them and the mayor. I'd like for somebody explain to me what Section 8 means, bringing all these people in from all different states to live and get free rent." - Hagerstown

"The town of Williamsport had a Charlie Brown's Christmas at the beautiful Springfield Barn on Sunday, Dec. 5, and the sixth-grade chorus of Springfield Middle School performed to bring in the Christmas spirit, and did a fantastic job. The audience was so disrespectful and talked so loud that you could barely hear these dear children who performed in the cold for you." - Sharpsburg

"I agree with the person who had the article in Mail Call about some places and some people didn't want to say 'Merry Christmas.' Well, to me it's, 'Merry Christmas,' so Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas. And anybody who doesn't like that can just pack their bags and move on or do whatever they want to do, because it's always going to be Merry Christmas to me." - Sharpsburg

"I'm calling in reference to the article regarding the recycling bins, the four sites in Hagerstown, and I do agree with the councilman, Forrest Easton. I believe that they should be removed. I also believe that the city of Hagerstown ought to remove the green and blue boxes and replace them with one large blue container that people can - that they can put all their recyclables in, and make it a more - and push the program in 2011, to get more participants." - Hagerstown

"I'd just like to say a thank you to the great job that was - for the blacktopping on Salem Avenue. It's great to go across the smooth road. Thank you, guys." - Hagerstown

"I'd like to put in the paper something about I'd like to thank the person that found my Lippman's bag Saturday at the ... store, and turned it in. They didn't leave a name or anything, but there's still some good people in this world, and I'd like to say thank you again." - Greencastle, Pa.

"I have a question. When did it become a crime to work hard and become rich? I just don't know when it happened." - Hagerstown

"Beautiful sight on Frederick Street in Hagerstown. Washington County AMVETS Post 10 surrounded by the flags of the United States and the state of Maryland. Too often our military observance days just slip by almost unnoticed. But our veterans never forget. Pearl Harbor was a major turning point for thousands of people in this country and all over the world. Good job, AMVETS. Keep up the good work." - Hagerstown

"To the reader calling in about truck drivers: 'Professional' simply means that a person is paid for what they do. It has nothing to do with the quality or skill with how they do it. We would hope that someone who gets paid would be proficient at what they do, but that isn't always the case in most occupations - not just truck driving." - Williamsport

"To the caller in Tuesday's Mail Call from Waynesboro: I agree that 2 percent of $50,000 would amount to a $1,000 tax cut, but what I was taught in school, 2 percent of $500,000 would amount to a $10,000 tax cut." - Smithsburg

"This is to the person who complained about the calendar saying 'Winter Events' instead of 'Christmas Events.' They said 'Winter' because there are other holidays in December as well as Christmas. You also have Hanukkah, Yule, Kwanzaa and New Year's, to name a few. There are not just Christians in this country, there are also Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, Wiccans, Pagans, atheists, agnostics ... to name a few other faiths. Should they be ignored ... or would you rather see the calendar acknowledge their holidays, too?" - Boonsboro

"While on the subject of dogs in Mail Call lately, I'd like to know why people walk across other people's yards to take their dog somewhere else to do its business. What's wrong with your own yard? Where I come from that's called trespassing, and not to mention being inconsiderate." - Mount Lena

"Whoever hit our fence off of James Street in the West End, I hope you have a merry Christmas." - Hagerstown

"This is Dec. 9. I'd like to - a good gentleman was a-snooping around my house, and guess what? A good ol' skunk sprayed, but I hope he got him." - Dual Highway

"When President Bush was president and gas prices were on the rise, some of you out there said that he was hooked up with big oil. Now that gas prices are on the rise again, is President Obama hooked up with big oil? I'd like to hear from you."- Boonsboro
