CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — Ned W. Kershner, 86, of Chambersburg, Pa., and formerly of Hagerstown, Md., died at 7:23 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2010 at his home.

Born June 8, 1924, in Tilmington, Md., he was a son of the late Wayne J. Kershner and Lottie Smith Teeters.

Ned retired from the Chessie System Railroad after 43 years of service.

He was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Scotland, Pa., the American Legion Post, B.P.O.Elks Lodge, and Western Enterprise Fire Co., all in Hagerstown, and the American Association of Railroad Superintendents.


His beloved wife, Pauline Gontz Kershner, whom he married April 19, 1977, preceded him in death on Jan. 5, 2007. He is survived by a son, Ronald E. Kershner and wife Judy of York, Pa.; a daughter, Patricia Custer of Chambersburg; a daughter-in-law, Jallene Custer of Florida; six grandchildren, Nick Kershner, Lorissa Sandy, Phil Tarquino, Michael, John, and Matt Custer; eight great-grandchildren; and a number of brothers and sisters.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Michael Custer on Aug. 27, 2006; two brothers; and a sister. A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010, in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg.

Rev. Beth Miller will officiate.

Private interment will be in Lincoln Cemetery.
