STATE LINE, Pa. — FEB. 10, 1923-DEC. 12, 2010

Ruth Spitzer, 87, of State Line, Pa., passed away Sunday, Dec. 12, 2010, at Quincy Village, Quincy, Pa.

Born in Garfield, Md., on Feb. 10, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Lloyd Denton and Cora Mae (Lewis) Hayes.

Mrs. Spitzer grew up in the Smithsburg area and was a 1941 graduate of Smithsburg High School.

She was a member of the State Line United Methodist Church and held various offices in the church.

She was a member of the AARP, a former member of the State Line Ruritan Auxiliary, a former member of the Homemakers Club of Greencastle, and enjoyed gardening in her flowerbeds, traveling and bingo.

She was a department manager and buyer for Routzahn's Furniture Store in Hagerstown, and had previously worked for Bon-Ton and Dorbee Dress Factory in Hagerstown, and with Fairchild Corp. in North Carolina.


She is survived by her daughter, C. Deborah Nicarry of Chambersburg; a son, Guy Spitzer and wife Sue of Hagerstown; four granddaughters, Denise Nicarry of Chambersburg, Jennifer Turner and husband Neil of Christiansburg, Va., Tammy Sulser and husband Gary of Hagerstown, and Tasha Spitzer of Hagerstown; one brother, Donald Hays and wife Shirley of Smithsburg; five great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Charles Franklin Spitzer; and five brothers, Harold Warren Hayes, Lauren Eugene Hayes, Merle Richard "Bill" Hayes, Lee Denton Hayes and Carol Paul Hayes.

Funeral services will be Thursday, Dec. 16, 2010, at 1 p.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with the Rev. Mick Dawes officiating. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery.

Friends will be received at the funeral home Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m.
