Bernard Lewis Spade, age 79, of Hancock, Md., died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2010, at his home.

Born April 21, 1931, in Lancaster, Pa., he was the son of the late Leslie Randolph and Beatrice Georgia Truax Spade.

He attended Whips Cove Church in Warfordsburg, Pa. He attended public schools in Hancock and retired as a machinist with Maryland Metals in Hagerstown, Md. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and was an avid tinkerer and an expert at custom metal fabrication. He specialized in collecting and restoring "hit and miss" engines which, for many years, were an attraction at the annual Berkeley Springs Apple Butter Festival.

At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife of 57 years, Edna Mae Twigg Spade, at home; one son, Charles Richard Spade of Salunga, Pa.; one daughter, Barbara Estalene Sparks of Hancock; five grandchildren, Michelle Lee Hann of Warfordsburg, Jennifer Nichole Ziler of Hancock, Steven Michael Bradt of Lititz, Pa., Charles Alan Bradt of Reinholds, Pa., and Deanna Lynne Styer of Columbia, Pa.; and 11 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Deborah Ann Spence; and one grandson, Chad Mellott.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 16, 2010, at Whips Cove Church, 5044 Moss Road, Warfordsburg, with Pastor Gene Harding and Pastor Freddie Parker officiating. Interment with graveside military honors provided by the Tri-State Honor Guard will be at Whips Cove Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 95 Union St., Berkeley Springs, W.Va., and from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Whips Cove Church, 5044 Moss Road, Warfordsburg, PA 17267.
