HALFWAY — They came Sunday night with loved ones in tow, many of whom were wearing accessories like sparkling red dresses and stocking caps.

The cherished ones tugged and scampered about, apparently excited over the chance to see Santa Claus.

But these Santa visitors were not children, they were felines and canines.

The seventh annual Pet Night with Santa at Valley Mall gave people a chance to have their furry companions photographed with Santa. A line of people and their pets wrapped around a center area at the mall where Santa Claus sat.

Once they arrived at a gate to have pictures taken, some sat with their pets along with Santa, while others preferred to only to have Santa and their pet in the picture.

At least 135 people brought their pets for pictures, which was a good crowd, said set manager Shari Johnson.

People gave various reasons for having pet pictures taken: a pet’s first Christmas, having something funny to send family members and a supreme way to honor the family animal.

“They’re our babies,” Hagerstown resident Lorraine Eastridge said when asked why people have their pets photographed with old Saint Nick.

“They treat us better than human beings. They don’t talk back,” said Eastridge, who brought the family dog Princess and her son, James Eastridge.
