Knights run past North

December 09, 2010|By WILL ROBINSON | Staff Correspondent

The Middletown girls basketball team ran away from host North Hagerstown in transition Wednesday, turning 15 steals into a 57-46 victory over the Hubs.

The Knights (2-0) led 18-7 at the end of the first quarter and never looked back, as North (0-2) was seemingly one step behind Middletown the whole game. Jacky Kessler scored a game-high 13 points for the Knights, while Caitlin Roy had 12 points off the bench and Tara Staley had five steals in the victory.

“Our biggest things are talking on defense and making sure everyone is on their man,” said North Hagerstown coach Cindy Benjamin. “But especially cutting down on turnovers. Those turnovers killed us.”

Middletown had its share of turnovers as well, as North finished with 13 steals. The Hubs also outrebounded the Knights 31-20. But North had difficulty scoring on the fast break, missing many wide-open layups.

“We played hard the whole game, though we did miss a lot of shots,” said Benjamin. “We may have been pressing a little.”

North didn’t fare much better at the foul line, hitting only 18 of 31 free throws, a 58 percent clip.

“We’re so fast-paced, we still need to slow it down when need be,” Benjamin said.

Autumn Fisher led North with 11 points and six steals. Iman Scott only scored five points but grabbed 12 boards.

Absent from the Hubs’ lineup was star point guard Quiellana Gantt. But Corie Anderson did an admirable job playing in her place with nine points and two assists.

Benjamin didn’t seem fazed by her team’s slow start this season.

“We just need more game experience,” she said.
