Wildcats rally after blowing early lead

WILLIAMSPORT — The Williamsport boys basketball team showed some opening-game character in its season opener against Frederick on Monday night.
After bolting to an early 20-10 lead in the first quarter, Williamsport lost its momentum and found itself in the hole by seven points midway through the third quarter.
The Wildcats regrouped very well and in a seven-minute stretch outscored Frederick 30-5 on the way to a 79-71 victory on their new floor.
Brandon McCauley scored 21 points, Stephen Christy added 19 second-half points, Connor Arnone had 15 and Tyler Wise had 13, all of them spread out except for Christy’s.
“We’re not going to be a one-man squad,” said Williamsport coach Scott Mowbray. “I said anyone can lead us on any given night and that was tonight.”
Wildcats turnovers and eight points from Jordan Dawson got Frederick back in the game, and the Cadets went on a 13-0 run to take a 47-40 lead with 3:30 to play in the third quarter.
Christy, who was saddled with three personal fouls early in the second quarter and went scoreless in the first half, came out on fire in the third quarter.
He fueled the biggest run of all, a 21-0 stretch, hitting a 3-pointer from the left wing for a 52-all tie at the 1:25 mark and a subsequent jumper for a lead never given up.
When Frederick next scored, it was a 3-pointer by Darryl Sanders that sliced the deficit to 70-55.
“He had a nice spurt, put us on his back right there,” said Mowbray of Christy.
Xavier Green had seven points and eight rebounds for the Wildcats, all in the first half. Wise, in his first-ever varsity start, also contributed six rebounds.
“(Wise) did a lot of the good, little, dirty stuff that you don’t see in the scorebook,” said Mowbray. “He made nice plays at both ends of the floor.”
Williamsport had a big advantage at the foul line, hitting 23 of 37 compared to 13 of 19 for Frederick.
Arnone was busy at the stripe, going 16 times, but hitting only eight.
Arnone had six assists, while McCauley had five.
Galen Jee scored 24 to lead Frederick, hitting 5 of 10 from 3-point range. Dawson had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
