Home cooking: The best-ever cake

This is the best cake you will ever taste. The recipe was given to JoAnne Ireland by a 92-year-old family friend, Dorothy Correale, who now lives in Florida.

It is JoAnne’s go-to recipe for just about every occasion.

Hungarian Sour Cream Coffee Cake

Topping

1 8-ounce can or package of walnuts, ground fine

3 tablespoons cinnamon

1 cup sugar

Batter

1/2 pound butter, softened

2 cups sugar

4 eggs

2 teaspoons vanilla

2 cups all-purpose flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

2 teaspoons baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

2 cups sour cream



Heat oven to 350 degrees.

Mix the walnuts, cinnamon, and 1 cup sugar together and set aside.

Cream butter and 2 cups sugar until fluffy. Beat in eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in vanilla.

Sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Add to creamed mixture, alternating with the sour cream.

Turn half the batter into a well-greased, floured 10-inch-by-14-inch-by3-inch pan. Sprinkle with half the walnut mixture. Cover with the remaining batter. Be careful when spreading over the walnut mixture. Cover evenly. Top with the remaining walnut mixture.

Bake for 40 to 45 minutes or until cake tests done.
