Ballroom dance party

Jim Powers will hold his ballroom dance party Friday from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Maugansville Ruritan Building on Maugans Avenue. Admission costs $4 per person.

Pen Mar Park

The Martinsburg Big Band will perform Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at Pen Mar Park as the summer music series comes to an end for the season. Admission is free, but donations are accepted.

Autumn festival set for Saturday

Autumn Glory Day will be Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Welty Church of the Brethren, at the corner of Greensburg and Welty Church roads in Smithsburg.

The event will include a yard sale, including books. Apple dumplings and soup will be available.

Gun bonanza

The Smithsburg Fire Co. will hold its annual gun bonanza Saturday, Oct. 9, at the fire company at 22 N. Main St. in Smithsburg.


Doors open at 5 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6. Tickets cost $30 per couple.

Dinner includes pit beef, baked beans, macaroni and cheese, coleslaw, homemade desserts, Barb's famous chili and drinks.

The bonanza offers a chance to wins guns, deer feeder and other items. Grand prize is a gun/muzzleloader guided hunt for two at Sand Rock Outfitters in Missouri. Hunting licenses and travel expenses are not included. Must be present to win.

Fall festival

Ringgold Church of Christ will hold its fall festival Sunday, Oct. 31, starting at 1 p.m.

The event will include:

o 1 to 4:30 - tailgating party, tailgating decorating contest, food, flag football, hayrides and other activities

o 4 to 6:30 p.m. - Family carnival, including carnival games, prizes, chili cook-off and pie-eating contests

o 6:30 p.m. - Trunk or Treat for children. The event is free, but tickets are required and should be requested by Oct. 24.

College fair to be held Oct. 13

Hagerstown Community College will hold its annual college fair Wednesday, Oct. 13, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Athletic, Recreation and Community Center.

Representatives from more than 100 colleges, universities and technical schools in the mid-Atlantic region will be on hand to meet with prospective students.

The fair is sponsored by Washington County Public Schools and HCC. Admission is free.

HCC cash bonanza

Hagerstown Community College's Alumni Association will hold its third annual cash bonanza Friday, Oct. 22, at Elks Lodge 378 on Robinwood Drive.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6:30.

The bonanza will feature a chicken dinner for two, unlimited beer and soda, door prizes and a chance to win $1,000 in cash.

Live music will be performed by Sister Mary Elephant.

Tickets cost $40 per couple. The event is open to the public. All proceeds benefit HCC.

Smithsburg TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) Chapter 0462 had a good meeting this past Thursday with total losses of 13.25 pounds.

Ola was the best thinner winner with a 4.75-pound loss. John took second place with a 4.5-pound loss. Sallie got back on track with a loss of 3.0 pounds.

After roll call and a short business meeting, the group discussed the upcoming fall rally in Ridge, Md., in October.

Area TOPS Captain Parilee Barber led a program on stress, how to cope with it and how it affects a person's weight-loss plan.

The chapter meets Thursdays at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 51 S. Main St. in Smithsburg. Weigh-in starts at 5:30 p.m. and the meeting is from 6 to 7.
