Market Day returns to Waynesboro on Saturday

September 27, 2010|By JENNIFER FITCH

WAYNESBORO, Pa. -- Waynesboro's largest street festival returns Saturday with dozens of activities, a chili cook-off and more than 100 vendors.

The sixth annual Market Day will include horse-drawn hayrides and an Oktoberfest-style beer garden for the first time. The festival on Main Street between Potomac and Broad streets is organized by the nonprofit Main Street Waynesboro Inc.

"It's just growing every year, and it's amazing," said Melissa Russ, promotions director.

Market Day will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The beer garden in the parking lot beside Susquehanna Bank on Center Square will be open from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

People ages 21 and older who want to enter the beer garden will be required to pay $3 for admittance. However, with that admission charge, they'll receive a ticket for a free beer inside the tent.

Those people also will receive hand stamps to enter and exit the tent, which will feature beer sales and music.

"Once you're stamped, you're good to go," Russ said.

Proceeds from the beer garden will benefit Main Street Waynesboro Inc., which focuses on downtown revitalization, according to Russ.

"We'll have it very well secured and staffed," she said.

Vendors on Main Street (Pa. 16) will offer a variety of products and demonstrations, including chair caning. A vendor who makes sweaters and products from alpaca fur will bring the animals to further educate the public about them.

Musicians will perform next to the John Wallace building and in front of the former Sheetz.

"WAYZ will be here from 9:30 to 11:30, and he'll be giving away prizes from his van," Russ said.

Pa. 16 is under construction through a $1.9 million contract from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Dave Roman, superintendent with contractor Highway Materials, said the portion of road used for Market Day should have a skim coat by Saturday.

The skim coat will be the same as the surface already in place west of Grant Street, Roman said.

The completion of that coating depends on weather, he said.

"Next week the final coating will start," Roman said.

Also on Saturday, St. Andrew School will host activities to benefit field trips. The school will have an indoor yard sale, craft vendors, children's games, baked goods and other food, train rides, and an inflatable game and rock-climbing wall, according to school secretary Nina Miller.

The activities will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., she said.

Russ said people trying to access the Waynesboro Post Office will be allowed to park in the last row of spaces at the old CVS Pharmacy. People who need physical assistance getting around the festival can call Russ at 717-762-0397 ahead of time to make arrangements for transportation via golf cart.
