September 27, 2010

Three area elementary schools were among the leaders in the state collecting change for the Pasta for Pennies fundraiser sponsored by Olive Garden.

Myersville (Md.) Elementary School, Orchard Grove Elementary School in Frederick, Md., and Boonsboro Elementary School were the leading schools. Myersville collected $5,649, Orchard Grove had $4,489 and Boonsboro Elementary had $3,950.

The program benefits the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

The area donations, paired with funds collected throughout the nation, added up to more than $6.1 million. This record-breaking amount brings total funds raised by the restaurant to more than $53 million over the last 16 years.

During three-week periods during the school year, students from 14 schools in Baltimore, Frederick, Howard, Washington and Wicomico counties committed to collecting pocket change to fill collection jars in their classrooms. The class collecting the most money receives a pasta party delivered to their classroom by their local Olive Garden restaurant.
