Cruise for Youth

St. John's Lutheran Church, at 141 S. Potomac St. in Hagerstown, will provide a unique background Saturday for the inaugural Cruise for Youth car show.

The church's youth group will host the show to raise funds for their programs.

Cars of all types, trucks and motorcycles are welcome. The fee is $15 for entries. Trophies will be awarded and refreshments will be available.

St. John's is celebrating the 240th anniversary of the congregation this month and the youth group hopes to fill the parking lots with plenty of show cars.

The event is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Class of 1961

The South Hagerstown High School class of 1961 will hold its yearly picnic Saturday at Martin L. "Marty" Snook Memorial Park in Halfway. The picnic will be in Pavilion No. 2, starting at 11 a.m. Attendees are asked to bring a covered dish. The reunion committee will provide all other supplies.

Yearbook supplement

South Hagerstown High School has the summer supplement for the 2009-10 yearbook. The supplement can be picked up at the school in the main office.

Diabetes class

The Washington County Health Department will offer a program for individuals who are at high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes and individuals with diabetes.

The program will be held on Tuesdays, from Tuesday to Oct. 26, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Classes will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 15 Randolph Ave. in Hagerstown. The cost of the five-week program is $25.

This program is designed to assist people with prediabetes and diabetes in making important lifestyle changes.

Emma K. Doub

Emma K. Doub Elementary School will hold Staff Night at the Sharpsburg McDonald's on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m.

The school staff will greet you, serve you and clean up after you.

The event will help support Destination Imagination and other school activities.

Hagerstown Lions Club

Tuesday - Stephanie Gray, from the National Park Service, will give a talk on the Outlook for Antietam National Battlefield.

Yard sale

The South Hagerstown High Alumni Association will hold a community yard sale Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the school. Registration is required to reserve a space.

Exhibit on display

Examinations of urban landscapes and architectural elements will be on display in the exhibition "Architectural and Industrial Realism," featuring the paintings of realist artists Rick Dula, Roland Kulla and Stephen Magsig.

The exhibition will be on view at Washington County Museum of Fine Arts from Saturday to Jan. 9.

Visitors to the exhibition will have the opportunity to view the architectural paintings on display and witness architecture in progress in the museum's inner courtyard. Work on enclosing the inner courtyard will continue throughout the course of the exhibition.

The public will have an opportunity to meet the artists at a wine-and-cheese reception Saturday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The artists will discuss their work during the reception, and New York City art dealer George Billis, who represents the artists, will be present. Tickets for the reception cost $15 for museum members and $20 for nonmembers. Tickets can be purchased by calling the museum at 301-739-5727.

Hagerstown Lioness Club

The regular meeting of the Hagerstown Lioness Club will be Thursday, Oct. 7, at the Academy Theatre Banquet and Conference Center in downtown Hagerstown. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m.

The guest speaker will be Gloria Dahlhamer, who will talk about her career in journalism with The Herald-Mail.

The community service committee will collect nonperishable food for local food banks.

Blessing of the animals to be held Sunday

A blessing of the animals will be held on the lawn of Christ Lutheran Church at 216 N. Cleveland Ave. in Hagerstown on Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. All animals and their owners are invited to participate.
