Items sought for hurricane relief kits

September 26, 2010

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Darrin Yoder, material resources manager for Mennonite Central Committee, knows from experience that having relief kits on hand at this time of year is very important.

"The Atlantic hurricane season lasts from June through November and nearly every year one of the countries in which we work in the Caribbean or Central America is hit by at least a tropical storm if not a Hurricane, " he said.

He knows firsthand from his days as committee representative for Honduras.

"Having kits ready to go from our warehouse in Ephrata, Pa., allows us to respond immediately as we don't have to wait for kits to come in following a disaster," he said. "The same is true for prepositioning supplies in the region. Having supplies as close as possible to the region allows us to respond quickly to those affected."

To make sure the committee is prepared for any disasters, the organization is encouraging supporters to collect supplies for relief kits in October. They will be prepared and placed where they can be used quickly in case of a large natural disaster.

Items needed for relief kits (new items only):

o Four large bars bath soap (leave in wrapping)

o One plastic bottle shampoo (13-24oz; place bottle in a resealable plastic bag)

o Four large bars of laundry soap

oOne squeeze-tube toothpaste (6 ounces; leave in box)

o Four adult-size toothbrushes (leave in packaging)

o Four new bath towels (medium weight, dark or bright colors)

o Two wide-tooth combs (6 to 8 inches)

o One fingernail clipper

oOne box of adhesive bandages (minimum 40, assorted)

oOne package sanitary pads (18 to 24 thin maxi)
