CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Darrin Yoder, material resources manager for Mennonite Central Committee, knows from experience that having relief kits on hand at this time of year is very important.
"The Atlantic hurricane season lasts from June through November and nearly every year one of the countries in which we work in the Caribbean or Central America is hit by at least a tropical storm if not a Hurricane, " he said.
He knows firsthand from his days as committee representative for Honduras.
"Having kits ready to go from our warehouse in Ephrata, Pa., allows us to respond immediately as we don't have to wait for kits to come in following a disaster," he said. "The same is true for prepositioning supplies in the region. Having supplies as close as possible to the region allows us to respond quickly to those affected."
To make sure the committee is prepared for any disasters, the organization is encouraging supporters to collect supplies for relief kits in October. They will be prepared and placed where they can be used quickly in case of a large natural disaster.
