Jeanne McCauley Cooey Vollmer was born May 30, 1916, in Hagerstown, Md., and died Sept. 24, 2010, at Coffman Nursing Home in Hagerstown.

She was the daughter of the late Robert H. and Edna P. McCauley. She was active in Girl Scouting and youth programs at St. John's Lutheran Church.

She graduated from Hagerstown High School Class of 1934, Duke University in 1938 and Strayer College in 1939.

She was married to Edward W. Cooey from 1940 to 1970. During World War II, she served as a volunteer Red Cross staff associate. She was an active member of the Hagerstown Garden Club and served as its president from 1962 to 1964. Jeanne served as state president of the Federated Garden Clubs of Maryland from 1969 to 1971, before becoming national roadside chairman for the National Council of State Garden Clubs.


She served as executive director of the Washington County Chapter of the American Red Cross for five years, retiring in 1983.

She was a member of The Presbyterian Church of Hagerstown, serving as Sunday school teacher, deacon and trustee. She was a member of the American Association of University Women, the Women's Club and Washington County Historical Society.

She is survived by her husband, Harry F. Vollmer III, whom she married in 1986; and five stepchildren.

She is survived by daughter, Karen Kitzmiller of Fripp Island, S.C.; and son, David Cooey of Corolla, N.C. She is also survived by six grandsons and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother, Robert H. McCauley Jr., in 1979.

The family will receive friends at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 27, 2010, with services at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2010, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Washington County Chapter of the American Red Cross.
