Editor's note: Each Monday, The Herald-Mail will highlight an infrastructure issue or other problem and will try to find out what is being done to fix or improve the situation.

We will not tackle situations involving neighborhood or domestic disputes or consumer problems.

The problem: With no stop signs for traffic on Buena Vista Avenue at its intersection with Concord Street in Hagerstown's West End, vehicles speed through the intersection, nearby resident Tonya Neil said.

Neil, who lives at the corner of those streets, said there are frequent accidents in that area. She said she parks on the street and has had two vehicles hit.

Hagerstown Police Department records show there have been 60 crashes at the intersection since Jan. 1, 2005.

Neil said she thought there should be stop signs at the intersection for traffic on Buena Vista Avenue, making it a four-way stop.

"There's a lot of little kids down on that street, and one of those kids is going to get hit," she said.

Who could fix it: City of Hagerstown

What they say: City Engineer Rodney Tissue said the city had not been asked to study the intersection, but he said if Neil would contact the city to describe the issue, city engineers would do an analysis to see if a four-way stop is warranted.

"We will run it through our board of traffic and parking, and if it's warranted, we will make the changes," Tissue said. "I think it starts with her contacting us."

Neil said she would contact the city about the issue.
