Corrugated metal sheet falls off bridge

September 23, 2010|By HEATHER KEELS

Corrugated metal is attached beneath the Interstate 81 bridge over the Potomac River, south of Williamsport, to form a platform for contractors who are doing maintenance work on the bridge.

A roughly 10-foot-by-3-foot sheet of the metal fell onto the C&O Canal towpath Wednesday night or Thursday morning and was removed by park maintenance staff Thursday, said Brad Clawson, the C&O Canal's chief ranger.

Clawson said no one was injured by the falling metal and contractors have assured park officials that the rest of the platform is secure.

"This particular sheet probably was extra and was not fastened, and when we had some wind come through (Wednesday), it probably blew down," Clawson said Thursday.

State Highway Administration spokeswoman Sandra Dobson said the work being done beneath the bridge includes cleaning, repainting and making minor repairs to the steel girders.
