CLEAR SPRING - F. Carlton Ernst Jr. died Monday, Sept. 20, 2010, at his home on the Ernst Farm in Clear Spring, Md., after a brief struggle with cancer.

Born Jan. 20, 1939, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Frederick Carlton Ernst Sr. and Ora Ann (Bussard) Ernst.

Ernst was a 1956 graduate of Clear Spring High School. He was a graduate of the University of Maryland (animal science: bachelor of science, 1960; master of science, 1970). He farmed the family farm from 1961 to 1983, raising sheep, cattle, crops and Poland China hogs. He became Livestock Extension Specialist and Animal Science professor at the University of New Hampshire from 1983 to 1989. He returned to the Ernst Farm in Clear Spring, where he farmed until his illness.


He was a founding member and worshiped at Hilltop Christian Fellowship in Clear Spring, and was active in gospel music, playing or singing with the Hilltop Gospel Boys, Crossroad (Barrington, N.H.) and the Brethren Four Quartet.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Arnita (Dell) Ernst; three sons, Stan Ernst and wife, Cathy, of Columbus, Ohio, Steve Ernst and wife, Sheila, of Clear Spring, and Matt Ernst and wife, Kathy, of Owensville, Mo.; one daughter, Suzanne Stock and husband, Jeffrey, of Colver, Pa.; nine grandchildren, Samantha Ernst, Josh, Jake, Joe and Micah Ernst, Silas Ernst, and Judah, Joel and Caleb Stock; and two sisters, Vera Mae (Ernst) Schultz and Betty Ann (Ernst) Bauer.

A celebration of life will be Saturday, Sept. 25, at 11 a.m. at Hilltop Christian Fellowship, 12624 Trinity Church Drive, Clear Spring, with the Rev. Dennis Whitmore officiating.
