Nettie Virginia (Burnett) Russ, 81, of Hagerstown, Md., passed away Friday, Sept. 17, 2010, at her home in Hagerstown.

Born March 20, 1929, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late William Allen Burnett and Elizabeth Marie (French) Burnett.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, William McKinley (Footer) Russ Jr., who died in September 1994.

Nettie graduated from North Street School in Hagerstown.

She had been a care provider for more than 39 years to Mr. and Mrs. William Bovey from 1955 to 1975, to Mrs. Ruth Wertz from 1980 to 1992 and to Judge Irvin Rutledge from 1992 to 1999. She also worked for several years with the Commission on Aging.

She was a member of Morris Frock American Legion Post 42 Auxiliary. She was born and baptized as a member of King's Apostle Holiness Church of God. She also in later years attended and was a member of Ebenezer A.M.E. Church for more than 22 years.


She is survived by one daughter, Lesley A. Russ Smith of Hagerstown; one son, Ronald C. Russ of Hagerstown; one granddaughter she helped raise and nurture, Chastity Lumm-Russ; 19 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; two great-great- grandchildren; three sisters, Jacqueline M. Harris and Lola L. Mosby, both of Hagerstown, and Alberta Freeman of Clinton, Md.; two brothers, Thomas Burnett and Austin Burnett, both of Hagerstown; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Nettie was preceded in death by three daughters, JoAnn Russ Stone, Carol Russ Laqueere and Diane Russ; one son, William McKinley Russ III; one granddaughter, Michelle L. Stone; two sisters, Edna Simms and Lelia L. Greene; and seven brothers, William Burnett, Chester Burnett, Mortimer Burnett, Ernest L. Burnett, Clarence Burnett, John Burnett and Melvin Burnett.

The funeral service will Saturday, Sept. 25, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Greater Campher Temple King's Apostle Holiness Church, 125 W. Bethel St., Hagerstown. Elder Tracy Brown will officiate. Bishop Bette Funn of Alexandria, Va., will provide the eulogy. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.

Visitation will be Friday, Sept. 24, 2010, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown.
