Ernest R. "Dick" Rider, 80, of Emerald Drive in Hagerstown, Md., passed away Monday, Sept. 20, 2010, at his home.

Born Feb. 4, 1930, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Grant and Edna (Gearhart) Rider.

He was a graduate of Hagerstown High School, class of 1948.

He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps.

He was employed by Pangborn Corp. of Hagerstown, retiring in 1992 after 42 years of service.

He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church of Chewsville, Md., where he served on the administrative board, taught Sunday school for many years and was Sunday school superintendent.

He was also a member of Morris Frock American Legion Post 42 of Hagerstown, Korean War Veterans Antietam Chapter 312 of Funkstown, Md.; Korean War Veterans Chapter 142 of Frederick, Md.; and Korean War Veterans Association of Charleston, Ill.


He enjoyed reading, especially history, and visiting battlefields and museums. He participated in the Hills of Glory bicentennial celebration in 1962, and participated in Civil War re-enactments at Antietam National Battlefield, West Springfield, Mass., and others.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Sylvia L. (Weaver) Rider, whom he married Dec. 14, 1957; one sister, Mary Jean Rider of Hagerstown; and nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Lorain Rider Snyder; and one brother, Thurman Rider.

Services will be Friday, Sept. 24, 2010, at 11 a.m. at J.L. Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg, Md., with Pastor William Warehime officiating. Burial will be in Smithsburg Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
