HALFWAY - Betty Lee Verdier, 72, of Marbern Road in Halfway, Md., received her angel wings Sunday, Sept. 19, 2010, at her home.

Born Nov. 13, 1937, in Hagerstown, Md., she was the birth daughter of the late Eugene C. Henninger and Mary E. (Moats-Henninger) English.

At the age of 10, Betty, her two sisters, Ella Ruth and Pearl, and her brother, Melvin, were put up for adoption. She then became the daughter of Thelma E. (Churchey) Strite of Smithsburg, Md., and the late Lloyd A. Strite. At the age of 16, she was blessed with a new brother, Lynn.

She attended Smithsburg High School and was to graduate with the class of 1955. She received her GED in 1978, and was going to attend her 55th year class reunion on Oct. 9.

She was a faithful Christian and member of the Welty Church of the Brethren in Smithsburg.

She was self-employed as an Avon representative and a care provider for United Cerebral Palsy and the Department of Social Services' Adult Foster Care Program, retiring in 1998.

Betty loved to read her Bible, do word searches and quilting. She also enjoyed riding her scooter around the neighborhood and feeding the neighbors' animals dog treats.

In addition to her mother, Thelma E. (Churchey) Strite, she is survived by her only daughter and caregiver, with whom she resided, Anna Marie E. Verdier-Gilbert, and husband, Craig, of Halfway; three sons, James E. Kline and wife, Ruby, of Hagerstown, Lloyd A. Kline of Scottsbluff, Neb., and John R. Kline and companion, Doris Dawson, of Sharpsburg, Md.; three sisters, Pearl E. Masser of Powell, Tenn., Mary Humelsine of Hagerstown and Harriet Downin of Keedysville, Md.; two brothers, Melvin G. Strite of Hagerstown and Lynn A. Strite of Smithsburg; 22 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Lee (John) Verdier, on July 23, 2001. They were married Jan. 11, 1966.

She also was preceded in death by one son, Charles R. Kline Jr.; and one sister, Ella Ruth Martin.

Services will be Thursday, Sept. 23, 2010, at noon, at Welty Church of the Brethren, Smithsburg, with Pastor Mike Manthos officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown. The family will receive friends two hours before services.
