School Board votes to reinstate $30,000 worth of stipends

September 21, 2010

WAYNESBORO, Pa. -- The Waynesboro Area School Board reinstated almost $30,000 worth of stipends Tuesday for three positions eliminated during 2009-10 budget negotiations.

Affected are the directors of federal programs, professional personnel and elementary education.

Superintendent James Robertson and Assistant Superintendent Evan Williams had taken on the duties when those positions were eliminated. The responsibilities previously were given to other employees who received additional compensation for the work.

When asked by board members about returning to the previous setup, Robertson said it would be nice to take the duties from him and Williams to give them more time for other matters. However, he said that in light of other budget decisions, reinstating stipends wouldn't be his first priority.

For example, support staff did not receive raises this year, he said.

Board members said they would like to take the responsibilities from the top administrators to focus their time elsewhere. They voted unanimously to reinstate the stipends and directed Robertson to talk to the people who previously did those jobs to see if they would step back in the roles.
