LAVALE, Md. - Gary Edward Thompson, 69, of LaVale, died Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010, at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 6, 1941, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Earl Edward Thompson and Pauline Wyoma (Moats) Thompson.

Gary was a 1959 graduate of Fort Hill High School. He attended Frostburg State College.

He served in the Maryland National Guard.

He began his automotive career at Spoerl's Pontiac & Cadillac, when it was located downtown on George Street. Gary was a technician and adviser in the parts and service departments. He was proud to be a Certified Cadillac Craftsman. He continued to work for Spoerl's when the dealership moved to Motor City. He stayed with the dealership when it was taken over by Fred Timbrook. Gary retired in 2008 from Timbrook Pontiac & Cadillac, where he had been the service manager.


Gary had belonged to First United Methodist Church and he also attended St. Paul's Lutheran Church.

Gary was a member of East Gate Lodge 216, AF & AM; 32nd degree, Cumberland Scottish Rite Bodies; Salem Council 18, RAM; Salem Council 11, R and SM; Antioch Commandery 6, Knights Templar; Ali Ghan Shrine, where he belonged to the directors' staff; past director of Court 117, ROJ; Hillbilly Clan 42; Western Maryland Order of Kentucky Colonels; Lodge 63, BPOE; and the South End Rod and Gun Club. He was a life member of the Cumberland Outdoor Club and Barrelville Outdoor Club.

Survivors include his daughter, Michelle Meade (Thompson) Jones, and husband Doug, Williamsport; three cousins, Debbie Elliott, Carpendale, W.Va., Denise Rapp, Lusby, Md., and Larry Thompson, Cumberland; and his special friend, Jean Burgess, Carpendale.

Friends will be received at Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from noon until 1 p.m.

Officers and members of East Gate Lodge 216, AF & AM will conduct a memorial service at the funeral home on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

The funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home Wednesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Donald L. Turley officiating.

Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Serving as pallbearers will be members of the Ali Ghan Shrine directors' staff: Dick Wheeler, Tom Paxton, Fran Shives, Rick Lashley, Charlie Dicks and Reed Clingerman.
