Hubs ring Raiders' bell early in romp

September 17, 2010|By BOB PARASILITI

BALTIMORE -- The North Hagerstown football team sent a message early.

It came with the impact of church bells at noon with a doorbell thrown in for good measure, but it got the point across all the same. It took all of two plays.

Anthony Winter went around left end on North's second snap from scrimmage and ran over a Loch Raven defender en route to a 53-yard touchdown. It was only the beginning of the Hubs' dominating 60-13 victory on Thursday in a game that was all but a formality after the first quarter in a steady rain.

"We came out early and hit them pretty hard," said North coach Danny Cunningham. "We had a heck of a kick out on that first play. We put the other team at a disadvantage early."

Winter rang the bell, but the Hubs hung around to add the chorus as everyone who was wearing a uniform got to play. After Winter's opening run, the Raiders' defense seemed tentative to take on North's running game.

In fact, the game got so out of hand and the Hubs (2-1) were so far down the depth chart, quarterback Steve Coccodrilli came on and played a series at halfback in the fourth quarter.

The Hubs led 27-0 at the end of the first quarter and 54-0 at the half. North needed just 26 plays to score eight first-half touchdowns, which included scoring runs of 53, 33 and 50 yards by Winter.

"Our starters got to play a quarter tonight, but I was happy our second- and third-string guys got a chance to play a lot," Cunningham said. "This was a great experience for these guys because they got a chance to get out of Washington County and see the city of Baltimore and learn to deal with some adversity, like a traffic jam."

There were no traffic jams on Loch Raven's field though.

Winter converted North's first two possessions for a 13-0 lead before A.J. Staley finished a three-play drive following a Loch Raven (0-3) fumble with a 19-yard run up the middle for a TD. Michael Franklin capped the first-quarter onslaught by returning a fumble by Raiders quarterback Steve Boudouris for a 21-yard score.

North started clearing the bench, but the points kept on coming.

Reserve quarterback J.T. Root ran 3 yards for a touchdown before Winter capped his evening with the 50-yard score to give North a 40-0 lead with 8:28 remaining in the half. Rico Johnson scored from the 5 and Trey Anderson ran 40 yards for a TD as time expired in the half.

The second half was played with a running clock and North, which lost the opening toss, elected to kickoff to start.

On North's first play from scrimmage in the second half, Anderson ran 34 yards off right tackle for a touchdown and a 60-0 lead.

The Raiders avoided the shutout with two scores. Boudouris hit Jake Greenbeck with a 72-yard pass with 1:55 to go in the third quarter. Devin Thomas ran 12 yards for a TD in the fourth.

North's physical defense kept Loch Raven in check, allowing just six first downs and 17 yards rushing on 18 carries. The Hubs rolled up 396 yards of offense on 37 plays, including 306 yards rushing. Winter finished with 139 yards on just six carries.

"I'm happy with the win," Cunningham said. "But we still put the ball on the turf twice. Still, they learned a lot tonight. This isn't the team you saw at Thomas Johnson. This team is going to get some wins."
