Street sculpture proposals wanted

September 17, 2010

A flock of hot-air balloon sculptures will be set out on Hagerstown streets in April.

The Barbara Ingram School for the Arts Foundation invites artists to design the balloons for the street sculpture program, called Take Flight II. The program supports the Barbara Ingram School for the Arts.

The undecorated, pear-shaped balloons will be formed from 3/16-inch ABS plastic. Each will be three-dimensional - 36 inches in diameter and 43 inches tall. This is the portion of the sculptures to be decorated by artists. Below the balloons will be a basket-textured gondola and a concrete base.

Balloons may be painted or decorated with other media. All media must be weatherproof and colorfast and must hold up under touching.

An honorarium of $750 per hot air balloon sculpture will be provided to the artist team producing a balloon.

Artists must submit their design proposal by 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30.

Hot air balloon sculptures will be placed on display in downtown Hagerstown from April 1 to May 19. The artist's name, title of the sculpture, and sponsor name will be displayed on each gondola.
