Community Foundation of Washington County MD Inc.



The Community Foundation of Washington County MD Inc. distributed $866,864 during the fiscal year of July 1, 2009, to June 30, 2010, bringing awards to a total of more than $7 million since 1998.

The $866,864 was accumulated through distributions from endowed designated funds, field-of-interest funds, agency funds, scholarship funds, donor-advised funds and unrestricted community funds, according to a foundation press release.

The highest percentages of grants were given to the fields of health (15.6 percent), human services (15.5 percent), arts and culture (14.6 percent) and education (14.5 percent).

The Community Foundation of Washington County MD Inc. is a tax-exempt public charity created by and for the people of Washington County. With more than $18.5 million in assets and 166 funds, donors may contribute to a range of charitable endeavors or set up their own endowed fund to ensure support for generations to come.

Bowers Insurance will hold a free risk management seminar on workers' compensation issues on Sept. 30.

The seminar will be from 8 to 10 a.m. at Beaver Creek Country Club at 9535 Mapleville Road east of Hagerstown.

The seminar is for business owners and staff who need to be aware of the latest regulations, labor laws and legal liability issues regarding workers' compensation.

The guest speaker will be Kenneth G. Macleay, commissioner of the Maryland Workers Compensation Commission. He will discuss recent changes in workers' compensation laws that affect businesses; the Subsequent Injury Fund for pre-existing conditions; fraud and the red flags employers should be aware of; and how to prepare to go before the Workers Compensation Commission.

There will be a question-and-answer session following the seminar.

Brechbill & Helman Construction Co.



CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Brechbill and Helman Construction Co. recently was awarded a contract by the Hardy County (W.Va.) Board of Education and the School Building Authority of West Virginia for renovations to Moorefield (W.Va.) Elementary School.

The $2.2 million project consists of a 58,000-square-foot complete interior renovation with a scheduled completion for the fall of 2011.

The architectural firm is Williamson Shriver Architects of Charleston, W.Va.
